Gary Custer (Navajo)

About the Artist

Navajo Master Silversmith, Gary Custer, is known for his exquisite high end precious metal work. Gary was born and raised on the Navajo Nation in Ft. Defiance, Arizona, near Gallup, New Mexico. His parents are longtime silversmiths and have a well-known background in old traditional Navajo sandcast jewelry. His work combines both contemporary and traditional designs in tufa cast and stamp work. He is self-taught. His great grandfather, Frank Apache (Tall Silversmith) was a well-known medicine man. He knew the Blessing Way Ceremony which is the backbone of the Navajo culture.
