Erik & Brenda Fender (San Ildefonso Pueblo)
About the Artists
Erik and Brenda both create pottery in the famous "black-on-black" style of San Ildefonso. Erik was born into an illustrious pottery family--his great-aunt was the legendary Maria Martinez. He began potting at the age of ten with his mother and grandmother. An accomplished painter as well, his interest in color led him to experiment with different clays and techniques to achieve new colors on his pottery. He recently has also been trying to revive the traditional polychrome pottery that pre-dated the black-on-black. He signs his pieces with his native name "Than Tsidih," which translates as Sun Bird.
