Autumn Borts-Medlock (Santa Clara Pueblo)

About the Artist

Native Peoples Magazine noted that “Autumn Borts has quietly arrived at her place among the best ceramicists.” Descended from a long line of distinguished potters, Autumn began to learn the ways of Pueblo clay when she was five years old. Growing up with one foot in Santa Clara Pueblo and one foot in modern California, her pottery also represents this duality. She continues to honor old-style shapes and designs, while also exploring new, more contemporary directions. But all of her pieces are characterized by intricate carving, beautiful polish, and multi-colored slips that give her work unique dimension. “Pottery ties me to an ancient tradition,” she says. “Knowing that a thousand grandmothers did this before me is amazing, and to have been born into this heritage is a gift.”
