Robert Spooner Marcus (Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo)

About the Artist

Spooner was raised in Ohkay Owingeh and works in several glass “hot shops” around Santa Fe. His beautiful glass pieces speak to pueblo tradition, but continue to push new techniques in glass. Both his mother and grandmother were potters and he is known for re-interpreting Pueblo pottery styles and designs in his pieces. But many elements of his pieces can only be achieved in glass—the striking range of colors, the light emanating through the pieces, and the intricate carving and texture achieved in the glass—all working together to give his work a beauty and drama that is unique. “Working with hot glass is like mixing martial arts with ballet,” Spooner explains. “It requires discipline, finesse, respect, patience, and an intimate understanding of the movement it takes to use gravity and heat as tools.”
